COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed for adult English language learners who want to advance professionally. The course will teach language competency and present information necessary for getting, keeping, and advancing in a job. It will empower students with the language and life skills they need to carry out their career goals. The course will provide ample opportunities for students to build awareness and practice the language in real-life scenarios. Its integrated skills approach will develop students’ self-confidence to survive and succeed in professional and social encounters within an English-speaking global community. The four skills of listening, speaking, writing, and reading will be developed and improved throughout the course. Emphasis will be on developing the life skills necessary to deal with situations that students might encounter in the job market.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The students will be able to:

  1.    read want ads in newspapers
  2.    deal with application forms
  3.    plan and write cover letters and resumes
  4.    develop interview skills and learn what employers look for in a candidate
  5.    learn and use the language of formal presentations
  6.    develop time-management, problem solving, and moderating skills

  

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

Lecture presentations are combined with class discussions and practical writing and oral assignments. Students’ participation is encouraged and mandatory in required assignments as well as in demonstrations, both individual and group effort. On-line databases and internet are integral parts of the course. Introduction to new material is done through visual presentations, role playing activities, and discussion. Class discussion is an integral part of every lesson.

 

STUDENT EXPECTATION:

Upon completing this course students will be well prepared to function in the job market. They will be able to find and apply for a job, write resumes, cover and thank-you letters.  Interviewing for a job will become an easy process for them. The students will eventually demonstrate their best personal qualities and qualifications which will enable them to reach their final goal of getting and maintaining the job.
